Primary lunch and play assistant (part time)

We are looking for the right person to join our ‘Mid-day Magic’ team: a committed team of staff who support our children to eat well and play together every day.

Job Description: Primary lunch and play assistant

Reports to:                 Lunchtime Leader

Salary:                      Ark Scale Band 3, Point 2, Full Time Equivalent: £22,206, Actual Salary working 11.15am to 1.30pm: £7,263 (32.7% Full Time Equivalent)

Hours:                      11.15am-1.30pm Monday-Friday, term-time only


The Role

The postholder will work with our pupils throughout the lunch and play session. The role might be based more inside, serving lunches in nursery and helping our children eat or more outside, ensuring the health and safety of all children is maintained in play, setting up and supervising activities and engaging all children in play.


Key Responsibilities

·         To supervise children eating, ensuring children are served appropriately and are encouraged or directed to eat appropriately

·         To support in clearing away lunch, tidying up and re-setting

·         To ensure pupils with allergies are appropriately fed and looked after

·         To ensure pupils are encouraged to use the toilet appropriately

·         To escort pupils to and from their eating space and ensure they do this safely

·         To set up exciting activities for pupils to play with

·         To initiate and sustain play with pupils, running games, teaching children the rules, encouraging and motivating them to participate

·         To ensure all pupils behave appropriately throughout lunch and play, meeting KSA values and interacting with their peers and staff appropriately

·         To actively teach pupils about how to improve their behaviour, in line with the school’s behaviour policy

·         To apply the school’s behaviour policy consistently and fairly and follow up on behaviour incidents and concerns appropriately including logging on the school system

·         To monitor that pupils are safe and that any incidents of health and safety are reported immediately and followed up on as per the policy

·         To administer first aid and deal with minor accidents, when necessary and ensure that first aid materials are fully stocked and follow up first aid as per the policy

·         To be aware of and implement all site rules and regulations, and to report any unsafe playground conditions to the site staff

  • To instil an ethos of high expectations for behaviour and achievement of all pupils

·         To contribute positively to the overall ethos, work and aims of the school.

·         To participate in relevant meetings, training and learning activities and performance management as required



·         Undertake various responsibilities as directed by SLT and the Administration Team

Person Specification: Playground Supervisor


Qualification criteria

  • Right to work in the UK.
  • First Aid Certificate (desirable)



  • Experience of supervising children at the appropriate age range (desirable)
  • Experience in a similar role within a school or the education sector (desirable)
