Ark Charter is growing and there are some very exciting projects taking place such as our new building extension that is due for completion in September 2020. The £4.1million project will transform Ark Charter Academy, Portsmouth, increasing the number of pupil places by 300 students, an eventual total increase in student capacity to 900.
As well as our pupils, facilities, and opportunities, we want our staff to grow too. We recognise that teaching can be a challenging profession. That’s why we give our staff ample periods for planning, preparation and marking and ensure most meetings take place during our working day to protect our valuable free time, and receive regular rewards and recognition from the Principal for our effort and enthusiasm.
The Opportunity
As part of this growth, we are seeking to recruit a Lead Practitioner of English to support the academy in raising standards of teaching and learning across departments, and to provide specialist subject expertise to assist staff within the English department.
The role would suit an excellent class teacher, or you may already be a successful middle leader who is looking for progression and subject leader responsibility.

The role
As part of a vibrant and collegiate team, you will assistant the Head of Department in monitoring, evaluating, and improving the effective delivery of the curriculum for English which enables the highest level of student progress and attainment.
You will also implement an action plan that raises standards in student motivation, improves the quality of teaching and learning and achieves consistency, as appropriate to specific areas of responsibility. This role will require you to lead on the development of enrichment opportunities within English to create a deeper understanding of English in wider world and promote engagement
As part of the Ark network, our staff benefit from strong links with the wider network; particularly with the other Ark schools in Portsmouth. We harness expertise and build subject communities so that our teachers can learn from and collaborate with colleagues. As well as networking with colleagues in other Ark schools, our staff receive high quality training and support.
You will be aligned to Ark’s high aspirations and expectations for pupils and staff and have demonstrable evidence of leading/driving teaching and learning.
The successful candidate will:
· be a qualified teacher with a proven track record of securing excellent outcomes and with the passion and drive to be Outstanding
· have an up-to-date knowledge of English subject curricula and assessment requirements
· Demonstrable commitment to raising attainment of all pupils in a challenging classroom environment
· have had experience of delivering effective training to individuals and groups of staff
· Effective and systematic behaviour management
· have proven experience of identifying, and implementing effective strategies for rapid improvement of geography attainment in urban schools
